Managing Stress and Anxiety in Carers: Effective Therapy Strategies

Carers of individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities often experience significant stress and anxiety, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed, frustrated, and emotionally drained (Kamil & Velligan, 2019). This emotional burden is particularly common among caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia, dementia, and cancer (Han et al., 2021; Kamil & Velligan, 2019; Pitceathly & Maguire, 2003).

The Emotional Toll on Caregivers

The mental health impact on caregivers can vary, with some experiencing severe psychological distress. Research highlights the following:

  • Carers of individuals with persistent schizophrenia symptoms frequently report feeling stressed, burdened, frustrated, or angry (Kamil & Velligan, 2019).

  • Families caring for loved ones with Dravet syndrome often experience helplessness, anxiety, fear, and depression (Domaradzki & Walkowiak, 2023).

  • Despite the overwhelming psychological toll, many caregivers do not seek psychosocial counseling, even though it is strongly recommended (Boivin, 1997; Pitceathly & Maguire, 2003).

The reluctance to pursue therapy may stem from varying levels of distress. Highly stressed individuals could benefit significantly from therapy, whereas those coping relatively well might rely on informal support systems (Boivin, 1997).

Therapeutic Approaches to Reduce Caregiver Stress

Research supports various therapeutic interventions that effectively alleviate carer stress and anxiety:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - A guided online ACT program has been shown to reduce depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress, and carer burden for those supporting individuals with dementia (Han et al., 2021).

  • Traditional Weekly Therapy Sessions - Studies indicate that regular therapy significantly decreases carer anxiety and depression, particularly compared to minimal-contact or no-intervention approaches (Lopez et al., 2007).

The Importance of Seeking Support

Therapy provides a structured, evidence-based way to manage carer burnout and improve mental well-being. Making therapy more accessible and promoting its benefits could help caregivers cope with emotional stress while enhancing their quality of life.

If you're a caregiver experiencing stress, anxiety, or emotional exhaustion, seeking professional counselling or structured support programs can help you navigate the challenges of caregiving. With the right strategies, it's possible to maintain emotional resilience and provide compassionate care to your loved ones.
